JENNIFER H. WHITE, MA ~ Founder Root Systems Institute

My "specialty" is being a generalist. We are rare birds these days as our society seems
to be moving further and further towards favoring specialization as the status quo. I see
my role as reminding us of our holistic nature and connectedness, and serving to
integrate and synthesize information into a format that makes it directly applicable to our
lives and well being. It is absolutely necessary for there to be individuals who focus on a
particular area and develop a depth of expertise in that subject; and, it is equally as
important for there to be people who possess a breadth of knowledge to ensure that the
disciplines are dialoguing and learning from one another in a systemic way. My
experience as a therapist and my interdisciplinary background allow me to provide a
process for people that is both deeply personal and holistic at the same time.
I have applied the process I've created through Root Systems Institute to my work with
several organizations. I am the Executive Director of a national nonprofit called the
Simplicity Forum, which is a multidisciplinary think tank of leaders committed to "achieving
and honoring simple, just and sustainable ways of life." I am also the Co-Founder and
Director of Education for the Green Heart Institute where I developed and facilitate a
program for helping people discover what they can do in their homes and businesses to
reduce their environmental impact. Through a holistic approach I work with individuals
and organizations to help them negotiate a process of change that allows them to achieve
more balance and "live sustainably from the heart." I'm currently the Project Manager for
one of our Community Initiatives in Lyons that will involve 300 families in a program that
measures and tracks their environmental impact as they learn ways to reduce it. At the
Institute we have created the Green Heart Guide an online and print resource filled with
businesses and organizations who offer the products and services that making "living
green" much easier. Most recently I acted as the Sustainability Advisor for the Stone Cup
Cafe, guiding them through the process of transforming their business practices to
socially and environmentally responsible options that more clearly reflect their core
values.
I possess over thirteen years experience as a writer and an educator in subjects as
diverse as physics and psychology, and throughout my life I have been dedicated to
encouraging sustainable choices which coincide with both our inner purpose and the
health of the planet. I was an Educational, Communications and Research Associate
with the Continued Success Foundation which provides services and support to
individuals and organizations who wish to achieve personal and global sustainability. For
several years I provided research and curriculum development support for Learning for
Living, a non-profit with a global vision that teaches life skills to college students. And I
have also been a Fellow and Director of Program Development for Higher Edge, a non-
profit “helping higher education contribute to a livable future.” Many years ago I co-founded
an organization that offered a nine-day wilderness experience with the intention of
allowing people to reconnect with nature and discover a vision for their lives. I have taught
Communications and Ethics classes, conducted local and national trainings as a Senior
Consultant and Lecturer at Northwestern University, and have been a technical writer for
several engineering firms.
I firmly believe that life is far too short to not love what you do and therefore I seek
always to find vocations that are both personally and socially meaningful. I am deeply
committed to service and have won several volunteer awards over the past 13 years as
the Volunteer Trainer and Community Educator with the Boulder County AIDS Project. In
that role I have conducted trainings for countless local businesses, community
organizations and educational programs. I have volunteered with the Boulder Institute of
Sustainability and the Northwest Earth Institute, and am on the Steering Committee for the
newly formed regional Rocky Mountain Earth Institute. I serve on the Lyons Area
Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and have helped this organization educate its
members about Sustainability. In my “free time” I sing professionally in the acoustic duo
Sferes & White and we also offer a specialized performance called the Eco-Tones, that
combines information about how to live a more satisfying and sustainable life with songs
that have thought-provoking lyrics. .

In my work, as in my life, I strive to balance knowledge and intuition, logic and passion, precision and humor.
